France national Flag

The national flag of the French Republic was initially adopted in 1794 during the French Revolution. It was used as the naval flag as well until it was reshaped in proportions some years later. The flag consists of the French tricolor - equal vertical blue, white and a wider red stripes.

Flag of Vivarais

The flag of Vivarais - a mountainous province in France. The flag was used on some of French ships from the Middle Ages during crusades till the American Revolutionary War. It consists of golden fleurs-de-lis on a blue background bordered with eight escutcheons on a golden background.

French Republic Flag - Wider Red

The naval ensign of the French Republic. This variation of the naval flag was commissioned after the French Revolution. Proportions of the flag are different from the national flag to make it easier to spot the flag from a large distance. The flag consists of the French tricolor - vertical blue, white and a wider red stripes.

French East India Company Flag

The flag of the French East India Company - a trading company created in the second half of the seventeenth century to trade with the East Indies and compete with Dutch and English trading companies. It was used on trade and war ships of the Company. The flag consists of three vertical red-white-red stripes and three golden fleurs-de-lis on a blue background with a round golden border and a crown in the center.

Imperial Standard

The imperial standard of the French Empire that was formed after the French Revolution and proclamation of the French First Republic. The standard indicates the presence of the emperor aboard. It consists of golden fleurs-de-lis and the imperial eagle on the French tricolor background - vertical blue, white and red stripes.

Flag of Brest

The flag of Brest - a port city in Brittany. The port was transformed to the main military harbor of France by Cardinal Richelieu in the seventeenth century during the reign of Louis XIII. The flag is divided into two equal halves - French and Breton ones. The French part represents three golden fleurs-de-lis on a blue background. The Breton part represents black ermine on a white background.

Breton Navy Ensign

The flag of the admiralty of Brittany and the Breton Navy. The flag was used on breton ships and consists of eleven black ermines on a white background in the first quarter and alternating black and white stripes, five black and four white ones.

The flag of Troupes de la Marine - the first French marines. This military unit was created by Cardinal Richelieu in the first half of the seventeenth century during the reign of Louis XIII. The flag consists of a white cross charged with nine golden fleurs-de-lis, and golden anchor in each quarter on a blue background.

Flag of Regiment Royal La Marine

The flag of Régiment Royal–La Marine, the Royal Marines regiment, established in the second half of the seventeenth century by Colbert. The flag is divided in four quarters, the first and fourth are blue and the second and the third are golden, with a white cross charged with golden fleurs-de-lis over all.

Second Flag of Bourbon Restoration

The second flag of the Bourbon restoration. It was used during the restoration of the Bourbon dynasty and French monarchy in the beginning of the nineteenth century. The flag consists of four golden fleurs-de-lis at the edges and three in the center, and a golden crown on a white background.

Naval Ensign 1790 Flag

The naval ensign of France during 1790-1794. The flag was established during the French Revolution by the National Assembly. The flag consists of the French tricolor with an outer blue-red border in the first quarter on a white background.

Per Mare Et Terras Flag

The flag of compagnies franches de la marine - a special infantry unit attached to the French Navy. It was established by the end of the seventeenth century. The flag is divided in four quarters filled with golden fleurs-de-lis, the first and fourth are red and the second and the third are blue, and a white cross charged with a latin phrase 'Per Mare Et Terras' - 'By Sea And Land'.

The flag of the Bourbon restoration. It was used as the Royal standard during the restoration of the Bourbon dynasty and French monarchy in the beginning of the nineteenth century. The flag consists of the coat of arms of the Kingdom of France in the center on a white background.
